Interventional pain medicine in Southampton, New York. More than thirty years on the East End.
There is no single test for pain. An MRI shows structure, not sensation. A scan will often show a disc that looks abnormal and is not the source of the trouble, and just as often the real cause is a joint or a nerve the scan barely registers. Imaging is evidence. It is not a diagnosis.
So the work is narrowing. History first, then a physical examination, then the imaging read in the light of both. Where the picture is not yet settled, the plan says how it will be settled, and that step is arranged properly, on its own day.

A working diagnosis, and a plan.
Where treatment is indicated, it is scheduled and explained in advance, so that you arrive knowing what will be done and why.
Bring a photo ID and your insurance card. If you have had imaging within the last two years, bring it — a disc, a printed report, or your radiology portal login will all do, though the images themselves are worth more than the report. It also helps to arrive with a short written list of what has already been tried, and roughly when.
